From popsicle stick kimono dolls created by elementary students, to self portraits drawn by middle schoolers, to the staggering senior mural standing at a wafting ten feet tall and 72 inches wide, the K-12 Art Show displayed a plethora of artwork that took attendees on a journey through time.

The show opened on June 1 in the WHS science win as the jazz band performed live music in the background. While several displays commanded the wandering audience to stop and wonder, the senior mural was a dominant presence.

“The cherry blossom trees along the road represent growth and renewal to honor both the seniors as they leave, and the teachers that have passed away this year,” art teacher Julie Hom-Mandell explained.

One interesting style in particular was the encaustic paintings, funded by WEEFC.

“We had pure melted beeswax and mixed it with color pigments to make a paint for this ancient art form,” Hom-Mandell said. “The students loved having the opportunity to explore this.”

While the themes of nature and culture were most prominent among the works, each piece was a work of self expression.

“I think that the students identified with their pieces, and felt confident to explore and express themselves,” Hom-Mandell said.
