Most summer days are filled with sunshine and outdoor activities, but a rainy day can make you feel like your options are limited, keeping you inside. Instead of feeling stuck, that is the perfect time to discover a new show to binge on one of the streaming services available.
“Dexter” is a popular crime drama available on Netflix about a man named Dexter Morgan who works as a blood splatter expert for the Miami police. He is also a homicidal sociopath who controls his urges by secretly hunting and killing criminals at night, targeting those who have escaped justice. This contrast makes the watcher wonder if he is a hero or a villain.
“If I had to recommend a show, I would recommend the show ‘Dexter,’” said senior Tanmay Jamwal. “It shows the complexities of humans. It shows that the best of us can turn bad, and the worst of us can turn good.”
Another popular show among teachers and students is “Gilmore Girls.” The show is a funny and emotional drama about a mom, Lorelai, and her daughter, Rory, who are extremely close having essentially grown up together after Lorelai gave birth at age 16. Living in a small town, the show follows their everyday lives including relationships, plans for the future, and funny moments.
“I like the character development of [Lorelai’s mother] Emily,” said junior Maggie Foley. “She was strict at the beginning and throughout the show she starts to loosen up. I like to see the development of characters when I watch shows, so this was interesting to me.”
For many fans, the blend of family drama combined with humor and relatable topics makes this show stand out.
“I think it’s a good coming-of-age show. I prefer 2000s shows, and it’s a long one that I can binge,” said freshman Imogen Campbell.
If the show is of interest to you it can be streamed on Netflix, Hulu and Disney Plus.
“If a 2000s drama isn’t your thing, there are more intense options worth checking out. One example is a show filled with suspense and high-stakes twists. “Prison Break” focuses on a man who gets himself sent to prison to help his wrongfully-accused brother escape. Over the five seasons of the show, the twists and turns kept viewers coming back for more, and through streaming, you can binge it all.
“This is one of my favorite shows to watch when I’m bored,” said sophomore Dylan Conely. “I don’t watch shows that often, but this is one I can just pick back up after not watching. It’s also a pretty interesting topic you don’t have to know a lot about to understand the show.”
For those who want to give that show a look, the show is available on Netflix, Hulu and Disney Plus.
Fans of science fiction who enjoy shows that explore dystopian worlds should check out “Silo” on AppleTV. “Silo” is a thrilling drama set in an underground city where people live in fear of the outside world due to a belief that it is uninhabitable and toxic after an apocalyptic event apparently wiped out civilization as we know it. The show follows a group of characters as they uncover dark secrets about their society.
“It made me think about what could happen, and how different people would react in that situation,” said technology integration specialist Michael Sanford. “How would I react if I found out my government has been lying to me?”
A genre similar to science fiction is fantasy, and the show “Game of Thrones” is a very popular series set in a world of kingdoms, dragons, and political struggles that explores themes of power, loyalty, and destiny through a world filled with dragons, ancient prophecies, and political rivalries. The show follows multiple families and how they fight for control of the seat of leadership called the iron throne.
“It’s an intricate work that describes what power can do to a society, if not kept in check,” said WHS speech and language pathologist Brandon Jurewciz
In case you’re curious, the show ran for eight seasons, and can be streamed on Hulu, HBO Max, and Amazon Video.
An all-time favorite of mine is a popular drama on Netflix called “Breaking Bad.” The show is about a high school chemistry teacher named Walter White who turns to making and selling drugs after he finds out he has cancer and is worried he’ll leave his family broke if he dies. As he tries to provide for his family, he becomes more dangerous, and loses most of his moral values.
“It’s a very clever show, [and]there are so many twists throughout it,” said senior Andrew Kim. “Walter has changed so much since the first episode. If you compare him from the pilot to the last episode, his morals have changed so much that he basically is a new person.”
Whatever kinds of shows you like, there are lots of great bingeing options to stream this summer and beyond.
