The town of Weston’s 20th annual Pumpkinfest celebration is right around the corner, on Saturday October 19, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.With its record of unifying the entire Weston community, students at WHS are buzzing with excitement and anticipation for the big day.
Pumpkinfest is an annual tradition in the town of Weston and has historically been a sensation because of its “come one, come all” approach to community celebrations. It is an opportunity for everyone from the Weston community—students, parents, teachers, citizens, and everyone in between— to come together in a way that no another town event achieves.
“In my opinion, the Weston community is never quite as united as it is on Pumpkinfest. We really come together that day for a cause we all care about,” senior and student volunteer coordinator Spencer Dobson said.
“And honestly, I can always feel the connection within the entire community; everyone is smiling or laughing and most of all everyone is participating.”
The occasion has traditionally been organized and spearheaded by student volunteers from WHS. The games and events are run entirely by high schoolers, most of whom have volunteered because of their own fond memories of Pumpkinfest from childhood.
“As a little kid, I really looked up to all the volunteers and always wanted to be one of them. I always thought they were so old,” junior Addison Trodden said with a smile on her face. “But now I guess that’s me.”
In its relatively short history of 20 years, the event has already made an enormous impact on the entire community and created a multigenerational tradition of passing the baton from those who attend to those who take charge.
“Last year I loved Pumpkinfest so much that I decided to help run it as a volunteer coordinator this year, and while it has definitely been stressful figuring out the logistics, it has been undoubtedly worth it because of the amazing impact it has on our community,” Dobson said.
