Weston High School is serving up excitement with the grand opening of its new tennis courts, a long-awaited upgrade that promises to enhance athletic opportunities for students and the community. The new courts provide an opportunity to train and offer a better fit for the tennis team.
Students acknowledge the upgrade in quality and feel to the new courts.
“One thing I love about the new tennis courts is the reduction of cracks on the courts,” said senior Sammy Regelman. “There used to be cracks on the courts which made the balls bounce in weird and unnatural ways, but the new courts have no cracks.”
The WHS tennis team has been a successful program, winning many state championships and drawing new players to play the sport of tennis. Naturally, when the courts began to show their age, it was inevitable that they would receive new courts to play, train and practice on.
“We had to make sure that our student athletes were practicing on surfaces that were worthy of the level of play our athletes play at,” said athletic director Michael McGrath.
The project, which started on July 8, 2024, added six new tennis courts along with a new basketball court located near the tennis courts.
The boys tennis team has won the last seven state championships in a row. How will these new courts impact the morale on the boys team?
“I don’t expect the new courts to boost morale on the boys team since they have been incredibly successful over the last few years,” said McGrath.
The girls won the state championship in 2019 and have been highly competitive in the MIAA since. The new courts will continue to provide the team with a sense of commitment and acknowledgement of their hard work for seasons to come.
With new courts, interest in tennis could see a major increase. People could be eager to try the new courts and be quick to join tennis as a new sport during the spring.
“When we first renovated Proctor, we saw an increase of students who wanted to play soccer, football, and track,” said McGrath.” I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more students playing tennis and continue to improve our already strong tennis program.”
