Summer is a time that most WHS students look forward to as a chance to relax. Picking the perfect summer songs to listen to can enhance the feeling of freedom from academics, extracurriculars, and the stress of school. WHS students and staff came up with a list of three artists they think will be played the most this summer: Drake, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift.
In the initial polling, Drake was the artist most preferred for summertime listening.
“I chose Drake because he has summer bops like ‘God’s Plan’ and ‘One Dance,’” said junior Zuri Dibinga.
Drake is also very strategic about when he releases his songs and albums, leading to many of his songs becoming summer hits.
“Every time it’s summer, Drake is all you hear on the radio. Or he drops albums around summer and he has hits from those albums playing on the radio all summer,” said junior Leeyah Dede
Beyonce comes in next among the WHS community as the ideal summer artist.
“Beyonce has songs that go with the summer because they are fun and go with dancing,” said WHS youth counselor Danielle Mitchell.
Beyonce recently came out with a country album titled “Cowboy Carter.” This new genre may be a departure for her, but it still fits with her overall energy for many.
“Beyonce’s music is very lively and gives off summer vibes,” said freshman Zoe Jackson.
Beyonce alone attracts more than 74 million Spotify users per month, which is 9.3% of the human population. This may seem like a small percentage but that is a lot of people and that is the calculations from only spotify.
Taylor Swift is a heavily streamed artist, and she ties with Beyonce for second place as WHS’s favorite summer artist.
“I chose Taylor Swift because I like to listen to some of her music and she’s the first artist that pops into my mind,” says freshman Taiyu Guo.
Taylor Swift has a total of 14 albums, which totals 274 songs that Swift has recorded, but not every album and not every song is a summer mood.
When listening to music in the summer, it is very easy to be attracted to songs with uplifting beats, fast pace, and relatable lyrics.
“The consistently upbeat synth pop sounds she includes throughout the album guarantee bop after bop and the vault tracks may be some of her best previously unreleased music. Put simply, this album is exactly what you need in the summertime,” said guidance counselor Morgan Furber.
Now we want to hear from you about which of these three deserve the ultimate crown as king or queen of summer music. Vote here and we’ll post the results as the votes come in.
