Many people at WHS know that the school has a golf team, yet fewer know how dominant they are. Weston golf, following their crucial win against Wayland earlier this season, are 10-1, leading their division and currently heading to sectionals.
WHS golf defeated Wayland by two strokes on September 29, followed by two more wins in the next two days.
“Being our number one rival, it’s always good when we beat Wayland,” said athletic director Michael McGrath. “It was a really close game but we prevailed, which is great.”
The team credits its success to hard work and exceptional talent. New players have brought fresh talent to the roster, while returning players help drive Weston’s consistent results.
“People improved in the offseason, and we have some really strong players,” said senior golf captain Hayes Hanser.
WHS Golf has historically been a very successful team.
“We excel in golf each year,” said McGrath. “The team has qualified for the sectional tournament 17 years in a row, which is very, very impressive.”
The team has high hopes for the rest of the season, with their eyes on state success.
“We head to sectionals on October 10th,” said golf coach Mary O’Brien.“Hopefully our team will qualify for the State Championship at Stockbridge [golf club] on the 26th.”
Despite being a historically successful sport at WHS, some players feel their achievements warrant more attention.
“After our strong start and win against Wayland, the golf team should have more recognition as one of Weston’s premier sports,” said freshmen golf player John Sopcik.
